Strategy Workshop, Movement Roles

This is a public workshop, scheduled for Tuesday in the Arbel room, with flexible topics based around movement recommendations and ongoing movement roles discussions.

All interested participants are welcome. Please add your own ideas for the agenda below.

This is a working meeting focused on milestones for the movement roles targets developed over the past months. Many of these topics will be discussed more generally at the chapters meeting the following day.

Beit Hecht, room Arbel (1st floor)


0930-0945 - Logistics for today & tomorrow, welcome 
  Break
1000-1030 - Introduction to the space
1030-1230 - Sessions 1 & 2  (focus on charter and global recommendations)
1230-1300 - Recap and update online
1300-1400 - Lunch 
1415-1645 - Sessions 3 & 4  (focus on flow of funds and specific recommendations)
  Break
1700-1730 - Future work, tomorrow & beyond: acceptance, communication, regular strategy review

Goals

  • Meet other people and groups interested in clarifying movement roles
  • Review recommendations from the MR groups, and how they have been received so far
  • Revisit remaining challenges we face, proposed ideas and solutions
  • Determine which groups can act on or endorse these recommendations to move them forward
  • Discuss how to proceed with future and related work

The end of the day will focus on topics to bring to the Chapters meeting the following day (in this same space), and to the Board (also the following day).

    • A Poll/Questionnaire for chapters
    • A low-traffic list for discussion, w/ people opting in during the poll
  • An Affiliation Committee (AffComm)
    • New organizational/recognition models for partner orgs, affiliates, associations
  • Mechanisms to make group decisions and resolve disputes
    • Pan-movement mediation solution (for org-org disputes)
    • A mechanism for movement-wide decisions (Chapters Council?)
    • A mechanism for community-wide decisions (Community Council?)
 
  • Standards for parts of the movement (foundation, committees, chapters, other groups) - more detailed than the Charter overview:
    • Alignment with movement goals: increase reach, improve content/quality, increase participation, stabilize infrastructure, encourage participation
    • Participatory standards: transparency and reporting, openness, membership, activity
    • Legitimacy standards: mechanisms, representation, transparency, community support
    • Financial standards: spending, budgets, controls, transparency, reporting
  • How to ensure that different parts of the movement contribute to the mission and are up to standard
  • Peer support and review
    • Mechanisms of peer review by like-minded organisations
    • Auditing

Organizational and other roles

Organizational roles will be revisited, and mapped onto existing targets / recommendations. Next steps for approving and refining movement roles will be discussed, including transitioning to public discussion and review for the next iteration of this work.
