Abstract (please use no less than 300 words to describe your proposal)
This presentation aims at giving some background on how Wikipedia can help to develop and improve language skills. It goes without saying that it helps oneself to write better in her own language. However, one of the objectives is to focus on the acquisition/learning of different languages through the many tools and facilities that we have on Wikimedia projects. For the sake of conciseness, this presentation will only deal with examples taken from some languages out of the more than 270 that Wikipedia has to offer. Inter-wiki translation, speech and interaction with local communities help to develop basic skills which can lead, depending on the dedication of each user, to acquire a complete new language by writing everyday and chatting with other users of some communities which in real life contact would be, if not impossible, at least difficult to achieve.
Finally, this presentation will familiarize us with CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning). Besides, before considering in more detail how Wikipedia can be a useful tool in education or just to work at home as far as the learning of languages is concerned, we are going to give a brief introduction of how previous attempts in the history of CALL have led us to our present situation. It would be otherwise impossible to image how everything works without taking into account CDs, interactive software, IRC, TANDEM network, Moo, Hot Potatoes, and so many other programs without which our possibilities would not have been as we know them today.
To sum up the presentation will deal with the following topics:
  1. A brief history of CALL. What is CALL?
  2. The use of CALL in L2 learning/acquisition (schools, universities, etc).
  3. CALL, L2, and Wikipedia. Tools for translation, wikisyntax, thematical categorization, etc.
  4. Ideas for the future. How can we get involved in language learning on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects?
Track (People and Community/Knowledge and Collaboration/Infrastructure)
Wiki and Education - Wiki in Knowledge Collaboration

  2. This would be a very interesting presentation, especially since it was Wikipedia that helped me regain fluency in Filipino, and will hopefully do the same for Spanish and Chinese. --Sky Harbor 01:07, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  3. I am specially interested in "Ideas for the future". What can we offer to language academies to outreach editors to wikipedia? --Gomà 17:15, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
